Mexican Mexican Food (10/23)

Hi Everybody,

I took some vacation this week. (Note: A ‘luxury’ Airbnb condo in Rosarito, Mexico includes 180-degree ocean views aka the max degrees of ocean view, one working rusty elevator, duck taped bathroom door locks, and a lot of vacant floors.)

I was under the impression that San Diego Mexican food was good. Delicious even. But alas, refried beans, chilaquiles, and tacos DO-NOT-EXIST outside of Mexico. Unfortunately for Nicole, as cliché as it sounds, the margarita and refried bean soup filling my gastrointestinal tract each night terrorized our bedroom as we slept, which put a slight damper on the romance of the vacation.

I left my computer charger at home and did not write this week. Instead, I laid on the beach, sipped margaritas, spoke broken Spanish with the waiters, and reflected upon my writing progress for 2 hours in the Passport line. In three months, I formed a writing habit by writing for 2 hours, daily. That fires me up. I also shared 12 articles and 12 blog posts with all of you. I even let the public know that I was writing each week and published all my work on a website.

Admitting to myself and my friends that I wanted to pursue comedy, was not easy. I had to do it in stages. Three years ago, Aaron Miller asked what I would do if I did not have to do finance and I said stand-up comedy. He promised to watch my first gig. (You will be the first to know when I hit the stage Aaron.) Then, last January, I took improv classes in New York. After COVID, I started writing comedy skits. Then, I started publishing work to my close friends. Now, I let anybody see my work.

Thank you all for pursuing your passions. Because when I see Nicole finding brand new photography clients in San Diego, Matt and Ben releasing music, Asia in her soap laboratory, Greg quitting his job to become a coach and build a non-profit, Cam creating Life After the Line, Kevin realizing that 30 people in Ohio regularly listen to his football podcast, Michael writing about finance, Connor rehearsing a Ben Shapiro impression, Shelby making ink drawings, Brendon making music, Kristine going on epic camping trips, Cameron quitting his job to Build The Future, Ena doing Ironmans, John drinking a beer on Friday night and texting me about Tiger Woods, Nayyir starting a trading website, Arden studying climate change – every time I see you doing something you feel passionate about, it makes me so happy and motivates me to do the same.

I just heard Matthew McConaughey say that if he did not take the big risks towards his passion, he would feel like he was sinning. While I am not religious nor did I apologize for Trump in 2017, I agree. Not taking the risks I have taken to-date would have been an enormous mistake. And not continuing to take risks would also be a mistake. Especially because literally nobody cares what I do. You all just want me to be happy.

And Mom, you just want me to be safe.

LFG baby. Excited to have new work for you next week.

Love,

Chris
